A celebrated poet, she knows about &#8220;the power of imagery and metaphor to give concreteness to abstraction.&#8221; It was time to refresh my memoir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagery is the art of creating a mental image through descriptive words that use the five senses to generate an emotional response. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is a <em>Clich\u00e9<\/em> Anyway?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-4fc3f8e1 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Sharp as a tack:<\/em> What&#8217;s implied isn\u2019t untrue. A tack is sharp but the brain isn\u2019t, not in the literal sense. <em>To wake up on the wrong side of the bed <\/em>is a clich\u00e9 too. Both examples lack originality and should be avoided in writing<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The generative exercise in the webinar was fun: create new metaphors by interchanging two existing clich\u00e9s. Since it didn\u2019t ring any inspirational bell, I applied the exercise to proverbs. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-4fc3f8e1 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>As cool as a cucumber \/ As free as a bird&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>As free as a cucumber \/ As cool as a bird<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Time heals all wounds \/ An apple never falls far from the tree.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Time never falls far from the tree \/ An apple heals all wounds.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comparing an abstract (time) to a tangible (apple) was more inspiring than two words belonging to the same realm. One can philosophize at great length about the elusive meaning of time whereas an apple is a straightforward concept that can lead to five of the seven major types of imagery: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VISUAL (color), OLFACTORY (smell), GUSTATORY (taste), TACTILE (touch), and AUDITORY (sound\u2014biting into it). As for whether an apple can really all wounds, some say that one day keeps the doctor away.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two other types of imagery are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KINESTHETIC (the feeling of natural or physical movement or action). <em>I hang my head from sorrow&#8230; I wear it on my shoulders<\/em>\u2014Alicia Keys, <em>Superwoman<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ORGANIC (internal sensations and emotions to help the reader\/listener feel what the character\/interpreter feels) as in hunger, love, fear, disgust, and sadness. <em>And I start to get weak<\/em>\u2014<br>Alicia Keys, <em>Superwoman<\/em>. Weakness is organically conveyed with the word &#8220;weak.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Glossary for Images<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">METAPHOR: a comparison between two unlike things, helping visualize and interpret, without <em>like<\/em> or <em>as<\/em>. <em>There were sirens in the beat of your heart\u2014<\/em>Taylor Swift<em>, Red.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CLICHE: an overused metaphor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SIMILE: comparing two things with <em>like<\/em> and <em>as<\/em>. <em>Sweet like candy to my soul\u2014Dave Matthews Band, Crash into Me<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CONCEIT: also called an <em>extended metaphor<\/em>. A far-fetched comparison, more intellectual than sensual, nevertheless making sense. <em>I\u2019m the one at the sail, I\u2019m the master of my sea\u2014<\/em>Imagine Dragon<em>, Believer.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ABSTRACTION: expressing a thought without a concrete image. <em>&#8230; the warmth of her glance, pensive and sweet and wise\u2014<\/em>Tony Benett, <em>Wait Till You See Her<\/em>. We might extrapolate on why she was pensive, sweet, and wise. Perhaps abstract painting is a better explanation: it leaves space for interpretation. Driving a car is often used as an example of abstraction; it\u2019s self-explanatory that the driver doesn\u2019t need to know about engineering to drive one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANALOGY: a figure of speech, a logical argument explaining how an unfamiliar idea or object is like a familiar one. <em>Life is like a Box of Chocolate\u2014Forest Gump<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HYPERBOLE: a figure of speech using exaggeration to convey drama and urgency. <em>&#8230; one winter it was so cold that all the geese flew backwards<\/em>\u2014<em>Babe the Blue Ox<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ONOMATOPOEIA: a word sounding like what it is. <em>The cork popped from the bottle of Champagne.<\/em> Not to be confused with an exclamation\/interjection such as<em> crikey! <\/em>made famous by Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PERSONIFICATION: to give a human characteristic to animals or objects. <em>While My Guitar Gently Weeps\u2014<\/em>The Beatles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like a photograph, an image is the shortest way to express a thought<em>\u2014<\/em>that\u2019s why it\u2019s worth one thousand words.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The word clich\u00e9 jumped from the upper middle page of my notebook and I noticed the underlined word overused.
